Is reflexology safe in pregnancy?
It’s not possible to give a simple yes/no answer to this as it depends on the individual.
As a general rule – it is best not to have treatments until after 12 weeks gestation.

After this time the individual’s circumstances would be taken into account.
Take a look at the following examples which show how much individual cases can differ:-
Take Marie for instance:- Marie has been having regular complementary therapies including reflexology for the past couple of years. This is her second pregnancy. Her previous pregnancy was straightforward with no complications. She wishes to have regular reflexology treatments throughout pregnancy as part of a general preparation for birth. She has checked with her medical doctor and midwife and they have no objection to regular complementary therapies.
At the other end of the spectrum is Jayne:- Jayne has been trying for a baby for the past four years. She experienced a miscarriage last year and is pregnant again now. She finds it difficult to relax as she has a demanding full-time job and would like to try reflexology to see if it would help her relax. She has experienced spotting on a couple of occasions.

As you can see each person’s own history has to be taken in to account. It’s not possible to give a simple yes/no answer. Your own particular circumstances will be need to be taken into consideration.

Reflexology can be part of preparation for birth and there are many anecdotes suggesting that regular reflexology treatments can be helpful during pregnancy and also with labour duration.
